The charm is through the roof here, with character designs being fun, level themes being fun, the soundtrack being downright trance-inducing, and the gameplay being very polished. But now that I've actually given this game a fair playthrough, I entirely see why this series is so beloved. I just sympathized with fellow dead franchise enjoyers and wanted to see some funny monkeys take the spotlight again, i guess. I just wish Playstation would let me check how many hoursa it took for me to finish it.Īpe Escape was always that one series of games I wanted to see come back, yet have actually not played any of the games from, until this point. I think it’s a great classic worth of giving it a go. There are some mini games that felt very gimmicky and boring. Grabbing all the monkeys is a must for the true ending, but the game is more fun when you just go through each stage once. I just looked for some of the locations on the internet. The soundtrack can get a bit annoying when you are looking for that last damn monkey. Going back to older levels to get remaining monkeys is a bit bothersome. Some of the fights just took too long in my opinion. I did of course miss some monkeys/enemies because of that as well. That said, sometimes the developers must have forgotten that issue and established tasks that are hard to do without a better camera. The camera is not all that bad for an older title. The draw distance is short and, sometimes, I was left wondering if what lies in the way was a passage or just a wall. It's funny to think that such a useful thing like a double stick controller began as a gimmicky. The controls are gimmicky and hard to get used to. The soundtrack and sound effects are quirky and very fitting. It looks and feels just like a Saturday morning cartoon. 7/10, a good game to pass but not to 100%ġh 40m ProgressThe story is goofy and fits well the colorful art. Overall it's still a fun time for anyone willing to kill 7 hours or so and the music is great so that's a plus. I personally capture 19 out of the 20 monkeys in the level but due to not having the final gadget (which you unlock AFTER you beat the game) I had to essentially redo the entire level for a second time, and this is an issue common among the final few levels of the game. After completing the main story you'll have to return to previous levels to capture monkeys you've might of missed, and while this isn't much of an issue in the earlier levels, it does become a bit of a nuisance with the later ones, seeing as how much bigger they are in comparison. Until its time to revisit old levels that is. However, coming back with many years of games using dualshock controls, it can feel a bit janky at times especially during the first hour or so, but once you've come accustomed to the unique game mechanic, there will be nothing but fun to experience. This allowed players to mess with the environment in a way that wasn't quite possible at the time, making this game one of the biggest influence when the industry was taking the leap between 2D and 3D. Instead of controlling the camera, the right stick is used to control specific gadgets on the direction the player flicks on. However, this being the first game to utilize dualshock, the developer wanted to get a bit experimental with the mechanics.
